Introduction to Critical Infrastructure for IT Students

Our ever-changing society requires Information Communication Technology (ICT) professionals that possess the necessary cyber skills to protect Critical Infrastructure from risk.

NDG has created a new lab library for ICT learners to focus on key CI cybersecurity skills. These new CI labs lay a foundation of hands-on learning that helps students explore:

  • PLCs
  • HMI
  • SCADA
  • Modbus
  • CI protocols
  • ICT skills to review network protocols, understand attacks, gather information, and even explore how a PLC might be compromised in a CI environment.
Critical Infrastructure

Supported Labs

Lab Title Description
1 Introduction to PLCs The basics of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), including history, architecture, and an introduction to PLC programming using an OpenPLC
2 PLC Programming Languages Introduction to PLC programming languages and logic
3 Building Your First PLC Program Build a PLC program in the OpenPLC editor
4 Introduction to SCADA Introduction to Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, including the SCADA architecture, HMI, event recording, alarming, and an introduction to FUXA
5 Introduction to HMI The basics of Human Machine Interface (HMI), including process and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), situational awareness, and high performing HMIs
6 Introduction to Modbus Understand basics of the Modbus communication protocol used in SCADA systems, and identify Modbus traffic
7 Exploring ICS Packet Captures Analyze traffic on an Industrial Control System (ICS) network
8 ICS Protocols Explore and identify protocols used in ICS when capturing traffic
9 Scanning ICS Explore tools used for penetration testing, and use those tools to scan a virtual PLC network
10 MiTM/DoS Attack Automation on ICS Perform Man-in-the-Middle (MiTM) and Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks on a virtual SCADA/PLC system
11 Pentesting a Corporate Environment Follow along through the eyes of a hacker that has gained access to the Enterprise network to gather information for a future hack
12 Setting Up a Command-and-Control Center Set up a command-and-control center for victim machines to report back
13 Setting Up a Pivot Set up a pivot to gain access to the Operations and Control network
14 Deep Pivot with LDAP Use all the knowledge you have gained from these previous labs to infiltrate the environment in order to compromise a PLC
