Trouble entering passwords in a lab
Updated 2026-10-10
A password that won't work, whether to sign in to a virtual machine or inside one, is almost never a fault in the lab or NDG Online. Check these first:
- The right password, typed correctly. Use the password from the lab instructions on NDG Online's Content tab. Lab documents from outside NDG Online are not supported; Red Hat Academy labs are the exception.
- The earlier lab steps. A password that fails partway through a lab usually means an earlier step went differently. Whether the password works often depends on those steps.
- Shift, not Caps Lock. Caps Lock usually doesn't reach virtual machines.
- Your keyboard setup. Check your computer and keyboard layout against the system requirements. See also Keyboard problems in lab virtual machines.
- Your connection. A slow or unstable connection can drop or repeat keystrokes.
- Hidden input. Many password prompts, such as those on a command line, show nothing as you type. That is normal.
If you take the labs in a class, ask your instructor before contacting support.
If you still need support, open a ticket with the course, the lab, the machine or step where you enter the password, the password you believe is correct, your keyboard layout and settings, and everything you have tried.
